As Built

As Built

Designed in the 1930's but not completed until the 1950's, R. P. House is a fine example of a successful modernist housing block. Whilst the buildings, layouts and landscape are very well-designed the plan of the corner flats don't quite work.

The project involved re-imaging the internal layout within the bounds of the concrete structural column grid, with consideration to the service routes whilst all the time adhering to a tight budget. The stand-alone wc and bathroom were combined and the living spaces elevated through thoughtful, well crafted but practical design moves. The kitchen, hall and sitting room were opened up to create a fluid living, eating and cooking space with custom-designed built-in-furniture giving shape and character to the space as well as much needed areas for storage.

This project like many others of its size, although fairly small in scale, was surprisingly complex. Its success depended on meticulous care taken to make good use of every centimetre of the space available.
